Adversity

Sorry for the hold up in the blogs. We have just been on the road so much, it’s been tough to find time to get some thoughts together. This blog is about something that every human being goes through. Adversity! Sometimes things happen to make you wonder “why”? I think everyone once or twice in their lives have been through a situation that just makes them ask why. Last week I was in one of those situations. In the beginning of the first quarter of our game, one my teammates/ best friends hurt his knee. Now, obviously sports injuries are bound to happen. There's truthfully no avoiding them and every team will have some every year. This one, though, just wasn't right and had me asking myself “why”. By now you guys all probably realize I'm talking about Greg. From day one since I’ve been in Portland, Greg and I have became good friends. I have seen him in his ups and downs and have been with him through a lot. A worse thing couldn’t have happened to a better guy. My Mom used to always tell me that everything always happens for a reason, and it’s a song that I have kind of kept with me to this day. After this happened, it made me question what could possibly be the reason. There was not one reason I could think of. There was one thing I couldn’t
keep out of my head, though. FAITH! Now religion is something that I try to kind of keep away from while writing these blogs, but during times like this I believe it’s very important to believe in a higher power to help you through. It is very easy to get down and depressed during times like these. I feel as if there's a fork in the road for Greg or anybody that has ever been in a situation facing some kind of adversity. Will you take the easy way out and relax? Or will you take the road where you will face the adversity and break it? Now, I can’t say what everyone who is reading this blog will do, but I do know what Greg will do. He’s going to look at that door of adversity and with his size 18 shoe, kick it down just like he’s done before! I can honestly say that I truly believe that not only will Greg come back, he will come back better than ever. It’s not part of his DNA to give up or let adversity get the best of him. Mark my words and have faith because the big fella will be back!!!!!!!!!

Great stuff Jerryd. I'm glad Greg's got a teammate and friend like yourself to help see him through this time. Portland too is lucky to have a well spoken young man like yourself on the roster as well.

BTW, my wife has a congenital problem where her patellas are prone to subluxate (slide sideways). While this has never caused her serious injury, she has never been an athlete, either. I know you guys have some of the best docs around and this has probably already been discussed, but I could totally see how subluxation could have led to both his on-court fracture, and the couch injury after his draft. I hope this is something they are looking for because a patella brace (the kind with the "donut hole") will prevent subluxation from occuring. Peace!

You know Jerryd, I don't have the same beliefs as you, but after reading your blogs and tweets I believe this. You're a good guy and I'm glad we have you on our team. Thanks for posting.

Great to hear that you've got the big guy's back while he's down. He's fortunate to have such a good group of people around him, good friends like you.

Great game last night, btw. Thrilled to see you getting more run. Be patient, though. It's coming to you. Can't hold ya down.

Great stuff! It's awesome to see how you and Greg are really feeling instead of just listening to what the media tells us. After reading this post I HAD to start following you. You tore it up last night. Great Game.

Jerryd,

Something to keep in mind--Derron Williams spent time in the D-League his rookie season!

It has been great to see the Blazers mature over the last 4 years or so, but I've been saying that this team needs a guy who will go out there, yell at the crowd and pound his chest after an and-1. Rudy has a flair for the dramatic in that sense, but I really feel like you could be that much-needed fireball on a team of cold-as-ice performers.

I've enjoyed reading your blog and getting a glimpse at what makes you tick. You seem like a good guy, down to earth and humble. Remember that when all the success comes pouring in!!

Take care.

Great game tonight, Jerryd! Honestly, I've always believed you were the point guard of the future here in Portland (I sure hope you stay!). Either way, you're a very talented ballplayer and you will succeed in the NBA. I know how hard you have worked to get to where you are today; you have EARNED your success tonight. Maintain this hard work and meticulous personality of yours. It was great to see you smiling and truely enjoying the game again.

Congratulations.

Jerryd,

Great job last night. That was the best Blazer game I've watched all year. It's crazy seeing guys my age go out there and perform in the NBA. Keep it up man.

I knew that your time was coming JB. You now see what hard work, perseverance, and the will to take adversity by the horn's by triumphing over those hurdles truly means... that both you and Greg can and will overcome those obstacles, however Greg's road is slightly different than yours, so stay solid in your choices. Greg's time is on the horizon and he will show true to his nature and character. Keep edifying each other and carry each other's burdens. You really lit up phoenix and showed how the lack of playing time isn't going to get you down, no matter what the circumstance is you and the team can overcome a deficit and be victorious.

I am so impressed with you - both as a player and a person. My oldest son is 21, and has always been a fan of yours. Now I can see why. As a season ticket holder, we will continue to root you on and continue to read your blogs and tweets. I know your parents must be so proud of you, too.

Keep up the good work. You are one of my favorite players because you are talented in numerous ways and yet so humble. Thanks for sharing. GET WELL SOON GREG ODEN! Isaiah 53:5 "HE was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our inquity, the chastisement of our peace was upon HIM, and by HIS stripes, we are healed." Get Well Trail Blazers

They finally went to Jerryd!

First off, I can definitely tell how great you guys have been after seeing Greg's first interview after the injury. He may be disappointed, but it's definitely something that he is confident he'll overcome. I'm friends with a guy that played high school ball with Greg and Conley and he's told me how hard of a worker Greg has been. That was apparent at Ohio State and here as well. With friends like you, I'm sure Greg won't get downtrodden with this unfortunate burden.

Secondly, and speaking of hard work, you have a terrific game against Phoenix. It's good to see you getting some minutes and figuring your spot in a lineup that's chock full of talent, even if the lineup is injury riddled now. You also had a good game against Orlando tonight. Those unlucky shooting streaks are just a part of the game, and it was excellent to see you get to the stripe to get some points as always. Keep it up!

I felt horrible for GO when he was injured, but I'm glad that he has a good support system around him. I think you're right that people can fold up or come back even stronger, especially in his situation. I've got my fingers crossed that he comes back harder than ever because he's one of the good guys in the game. After reading this, it's obvious that you are too.

Really glad to see you getting more minutes, your contributions have been reaping rewards for the team. Nice job. Its great to hear about you and Greg's relationship, I'm psyched he has you in his corner and I bet he is as well.

jerryd-
I just wanted to congradulate you on another great game tonight. You are and will continue to be a huge part of this team. I'm almost more excited for going to upcoming games than I was in october, just to see you killing live! Hope you have a great Christmas!

I know you're right about Greg, he'll be fine. Congratulations on your career high scoring efforts in recent games too Jerryd. All I could think about as I watched the San Antonio game yesterday was that if you were a set starter, you could easily be a consistent scoring machine similar to Iverson.

Anyways, keep up the blogs. It's always fun to follow your favorite team's players!

Hi Jerryd! Great game tonight against Philly, I enjoyed our quick interview with Wheels after the game! I was hoping to be able to tell you about my daughter Claire's 6th grade class at Parkrose Middle School here in Portland. This year the Outdoor School funding was taken out of the budget, which means that in order for all 239 students to attend Outdoor School in the spring, we parents and staff and community have had to do fundraisers. Unfortunately our deadline is fast approaching, and we aren't anywhere close to our goal. If you were able to help us out with a donation or perhaps you could tell me who to contact that might be interested in doing so? I know that the Trailblazers are a very charitable organization but I thought I might reach out to you on a personal level. You wrote about living life abundantly and for these 6th graders, an opportunity to grow and learn as they will do at Outdoor School will be life-changing. Just ask any 7th grader.

Thank you so much for your time! I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
~Melissa R.

I really admire your intensity on the court and am so glad that you are such good friends with Greg Oden on and off the court. Encourage him during this difficult time and reassure him that Portland fans are loyal and love you guys for all you do. I can only imagine how hard you work and the sacrifices that you all make.
